“When the water was all gone, she left the child under a bush…She said to herself, “I can’t bear to see my child die.”…she began to cry.’ – Genesis 21:15-16 (GNT)
In Genesis 21:15-16, there is the beautiful illustration that reminds we must pray for our children even in times of desperation.
Today, parents, let’s look at a to-do list based on the Scriptures:
Proverbs 22:6 (GNT) says to teach children how they should live, and they will remember it all their lives.
Ephesians 6:4 (GNT) says, “Parents, do not treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, raise them with Christian discipline and instruction.” We do this by consistently being by their side, allowing them to seek counsel, build a relationship, and being their shield.
Counsel the child and be a good example. They must gladly copy and follow in the footsteps of their parents. Be like Hannah (1 Samuel 2:19) – care for the child. Even though Samuel was given to the Lord, Hannah visited him annually in the temple, presenting him with a new coat every visit. Hannah created joy and showed evidence of her care. She prayed continually for him.
In Genesis 22:8, Abraham nourished his child’s spiritual growth. When Isaac asked his father, Abraham, where the lamb was when he took his son to be sacrificed, he answered, “God Himself will provide one” (GNT). This taught the young lad trust and provision.
In Luke 2:49, Joseph and Mary still kept their eyes on Jesus, even though He told them that He must be about His Father’s business.
We are encouraged always to be present and aware when it comes to our children, whom we are charged with influencing for good in this world. Teach them so they, in turn, can teach others.
Prayer
Father, as we experience Your goodness daily, help us be good examples to our children. As we give them the freedom to choose, let them be able to look and see in us a good example to follow. Help us as parents to nurture their spiritual growth and guide them in the way of the Lord. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
